I have the 'fashion bug' and it's not going anywhere..

Sitting on my bed and looking at my very full, beautiful, impressive closet I see a lot of old and new - casual dresses I wore in high school, glamorous new dresses for the holidays, knit sweaters that kept me warm in the north, casual knit tops, dressy woven tops, jeans in every color of the rainbow, skirts in many colors and patterns, and a pair of shoes for every day of the month. Bottom line: I have tons of clothes. However, I have had a lot of years to get to this point as I have been building up my closet since the 'fashion bug' bit me over 10 years ago.

Since my passion for fashion began, my favorite pastimes have included shopping, putting on home fashion shows and having any reason to dress up and wear a new outfit. At 14 I would save up all my money for an upcoming trip to the Mall of America and have the time of my life spending it all on glamorous new clothes. Money may not buy happiness but the things money can buy (aka clothing) brings great joy.

I'm not writing this post to try and brag about how many clothes I have. I am writing this because I know there are other girls and women out there like me who have the same burning passion for fashion and can relate to having the 'fashion bug.' Clothing and fashion are my life's passion and my hearts love and something I have based my career on. Basically fashion is my life. Just as some men have their cars, I have my clothes... and there is nothing wrong with that.

However, I think my parents began to worry about me when they noticed how many clothes my closet was accumulating in high school. I am sure it was in their best interest to worry that I was spending too much and not saving enough. However as my mother says, 'Betsy does what Betsy wants', I didn't let my parents concern stop me from having my dream closet. Furthermore, my parents can rest assured that I still have money in the bank.

Lucky for me, I am currently employed with one of the largest apparel wholesalers of women's ready to wear, sportswear and suits in a 79,000 square foot building stocked full of amazing clothing. I am basically in heaven and if I need to take a break from my marketing tasks in my office I can wonder the showroom, which always leads me to find something I want to try on or buy. Working in wholesale has its major perks as I pay wholesale price for the clothes, which is significantly less than what it would be sold at in retail. On top of that, I have an employee discount :) So basically I am getting amazing, quality clothing for a major discount. I love my job! My fashion bug will only expand from here and I have no guilt.

Must-Try Summer Fashion Trends

Summer is flying by but you still have plenty of time to try some of the seasons top fashion trends! Whether you're spending your time at the beach, BBQs, or late night parties, temperatures are rising and most of us are starting to feel that intense summer heat. But don't let summer pass you by! Out beat the sun in hotness by trying some of these sizzling summer looks!

Slide-On Sandals: Teen Vogue says that this is the summer of the slide sandal, so give your feet a dose of comfy and cute with this effortless footwear. Slide-ons are an upgrade from flip flops and can be worn with casual to chic summer attire. I haven't had a pair of slide-ons since about 4th grade but I'm going to make sure they are on my next shopping list!

Gingham Print: This picnic inspired print is perfect paired with denim shorts or skinny black pants.

Menswear: The menswear trend has continued to be trendy for several seasons now and there is no chance of it going out of style anytime soon. The trick to making it work is mixing feminine and masculine pieces for the perfect combination. Teen Vogue suggests rocking an oxford shirt as a mini- dress or draping an oversized blazer over a frilly frock. If you're afraid of looking too boyish, just try a preppy sweater vest, baseball cap or leather watch to display a touch of the trend.

Wear White: According to some (outdated) fashion rules, white should only be worn between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Although I beg to disagree on this, you might as well wear as much white as you can during this time frame. Think white skinnies, skirts and my personal favorite - a gorgeous white flowing sundress. Consider a white bikini if you have a summer tan going on, because white will really make your glow stand out.

Sporty Stripes: Summer yacht club and tennis club attire inspires this current trend. Showcase the trend with a mariner shirt featuring nautical horizontal stripes or go for a preppy tennis sweater.

Overall Shorts (Shortall): Whether you choose a denim pair or one of the more trendy printed fabrics, overalls are easy to style since they just need to be thrown over a cute top. My favorite combination is to pair one with a crop top for a super adorable and effortless look.

Matching Set: Designers featured matching top and bottom apparel pieces on the runway this year, making it easy for you to go from your day to night look without the hassle of changing. Floral and funky prints are especially trendy and will look chic when paired with simple accessories and classic pumps or strappy sandals.

90's Jewelry: Chokers, tribal pendants and metallic cuffs are making a 90's throwback and serious style statement. Add some instant glam by adding one to even your most casual outfit. Maybe you can even raid your mom's old jewelry box instead of buying new.

Beachwear: A straw bag and panama hat are must-haves if you're spending time at the pool or beach. Fringe is also super in, so add a fringe cover up or bag to bring out your boho beach side.

Radiant Colors: If you haven't tried out one of the seasons hottest colors - this is an absolute must!! Radiant orchid and celosia orange have been especially hot this season. Check out this blog post on color trends and don't be afraid to go bold!

While researching these latest trends I noticed that many are looks that were popular in the 90's (slide-on sandals, overalls, gingham, etc.) As a 90's kid this makes me excited to bring back these trends as a grown up fashionista. So if you grew up in that era like me just channel your inner child and rock these current trends that you grew up wearing!

Have you tried these current summer trends? Any trends you want to add to the list?

How to Wear a Crop Top Even If You're Not Skinny Minny

Crop Top Styles
The crop top trend is super adorable yet can seem so daunting to try and pull off. Baring the midriff can be risky in fashion but more than anything it scares the common girl, who doesn't have a stick thin body type, from trying it. However, the crop top trend is huge this season and while out shopping last weekend I noticed nearly half the tops sold in some young women's stores are in fact, crop tops. I figured if retailers are trying to sell them to the masses, in which the majority of young women do not have flat stomachs, then the trend could (and should) be worn by all. Of course, if you're not so keen on the idea of baring it all, there are different types and styling techniques than can be applied so you feel comfortable and confident rockin' the crop top trend!

Type of Crop: There are so many variations and styles of crop tops out there! From t-shirt, lace, crochet, fringe, bustier, low-high, and bandeau, there is a type out there that is sure to flatter every body. Choose the style that feels most comfortable for you. A tight-fitted style, like the bustier, looks best on toned tummies while more flowy low- highs and t-shirt styles that don't hug the body will conceal more of the tummy.

Wearing a low-high dELIA*s flowy crop top with a
high-waist circle skirt (left) and with high-waist
shorts and a staple belt (right)

High-Waisted Bottoms: The key to wearing a crop top right is to just show a sliver of skin. With high-waisted bottoms, either shorts, pants or a skirt, it balances out the proportions and keeps your look classy and sophisticated. A lace or crochet top with high-waist denim cut offs are adorable for summer play while a chic black bustier with a pencil skirt makes a great look for a night on the town. Another cute idea is to wear overalls or a jumper over a tight fitted crop.

Pair with a Cardi or Jacket: To cover up a bit throw an open cardigan, jacket or blazer over your crop top outfit. This will leave only a hint of skin showing in the front and is a great way to take the trend into the fall season. A cropped leather moto jacket is adorable when paired over a crop and skirt combo. If you are more curvy and want to create a slimming affect, wear a long cardigan, jacket or vest.

Overalls and crop top from Forever 21 (left) and crop top, skirt and moto jacket (right) from Nasty Gal.

Layer a Cami Underneath: If you really don't want to show any skin, then simply pair your crop with a basic cami underneath. This is a great way to also play with colors and do some fun color blocking with two contrast colored tops. I chose to pair a coral maxi skirt and a crochet mint crop with a pastel pink cami underneath in the photo to the right.

Beat the Heat: How to Dress Cool While Remaining Conservative

Hello from Dallas. It has been over 2 months since my last post and since then I have graduated from Concordia College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication - Public Relations and a minor in Apparel, Retail Merchandising & Design. I spent a month traveling to see family and friends in Montana and Minnesota before making a big move to Dallas, Texas with my wonderful boyfriend. We've been in Dallas two weeks now and I suddenly have the urge (and time) to express my love of fashion once again. One of the most common remarks from people, upon telling them that I was moving to Texas, was about how hot and humid the weather would be. Thinking about the Texas sun didn't phase me (I am cold blooded) yet I wondered if I would only be wearing camis and short shorts. With the average temp being 90 degrees with some humidity since we have arrived, it has been perfect weather according to me. I have found out that although it is very hot, there is no need to dress skimpy. With the heat of summer approaching us in the coming months, I wanted to share some fashion tips on dressing cool and comfortable while remaining conservative and classy in your appearance.

Fabric is key: Lightweight breathable fabrics should be your best friend for the summer. Think cotton, spandex, rayon, jersey, linen, silk and blends. Sundresses are often preferred in the summer because of their lightweight, knit fabric composition. Swap denim for linen pants and it will make a world of a difference. Choose fabric shorts and skirts and you will feel much cooler. If you are a business professional, Jeffers of Business Insider advises to wear suits with open weave fabrics like high twist wools, fresco, linen and cotton instead of the average worsted wool. Just look at your labels before purchasing to ensure the fabric type will be pleasing against your skin when it's 100 degrees outside.

I wore a rayon blend maxi skirt with
a basic cami and fringe cover-up on
a hot afternoon in downtown Dallas.
Skimp on top or bottom, but not both: By skimp I mean quantity and tightness of fabric. To avoid showing too much skin, balance out your outfit by deciding on whether you want to showcase your arms or legs. Going sleeveless is one of the best ways to remain cool, so think tube tops, camis and tanks. If you go with a tube top, pair it with a longer pair of shorts or a skirt that is mid thigh to knee length. The next important factor is tightness. If your top is stretchy and fits snug, don't pair it with equally tight shorts. Instead go for roomy fabric bottoms. Fabric shorts, pants and maxi skirts in fun patterns and colors are great to pair with basic camis. However, if you choose a blousy top wear it with tighter fitting shorts. Black and white denim shorts with some spandex are perfect to have and should match most of your tops. Short shorts can also be worn with blousy tops or tops with sleeves. The key is to balance out the proportion of your clothing so you are showing just the right amount of skin.

I styled Jenna in a yellow polka dot bikini
with short shorts, a 3/4 length sleeve lace
top and aviators.

Wear cover-ups until you hit the pool or beach: We've all seen those trashy pictures of celebrities or everyday people walking around in public wearing dangerously revealing swimwear. Avoid looks from unwanted passerby's by wearing a cover-up over your swimsuit when en route to your tanning/swimming destination. However, a little peek of your swimsuit underneath will be adorable, so opt for a pair of cutoff shorts or flowy skirt with just a cardi or sheer top over your bikini top.

Have multiple pairs of sunglasses and keep them protected: Never leave home without your shades. Have at least a couple pairs of sunglasses on hand and keep one in your car, one in your beach bag and one on the counter so you will be ready for every occasion. One of the worst things is forgetting your sunglasses on a bright day, but you can avoid this by being organized. Invest in hardcover sunglass cases to keep the lenses and frame protected from damage. So often our sunglasses get easily broken by being tossed around with no case, but you will save money in the long run by taking care of them.

I hope these tips are helpful in helping you choose clothing that will help you feel cool, comfortable and classy in the summer heat! What other tips do you have??

Confidence is Your Best Accessory

I hope you ladies (and men) have enjoyed all my fashion advice and have found my posts interesting and informative. Today I want to let you in on a little secret and give you my BEST ADVICE YET. I've told you all about what to wear and how to wear it, with multiple mentions of different types of attire and accessories to enhance your style. But -- what really takes an outfit to the next level is wearing it with confidence! No matter what you're wearing, walk with confidence in yourself and your presence will shine.

There's a popular quote out there that states: “Confidence is your best accessory, never leave home without it.” I suggest you live by it :)

Stylist, Jen Clyde says it right: "You must be confident in your outfit. Nothing is worse than leaving the house feeling insecure about what you’re wearing! You should love what you’re wearing and be confident in your clothes. Confidence is the first thing people notice about you. It’s the first thing they see. If you don’t have that, you don’t have style. Style’s main ingredient is confidence." I completely agree with Jen, in that confidence is an essential element of style. It's nothing you have to buy, yet it's the most important element of any outfit. Give people an amazing first impression with your killer confidence.

How do you show the world your killer confidence?

Find Your Perfect Swimsuit for Summer

Swimwear from Etam
Finding a swimsuit to flatter your body can be just as difficult as getting up the confidence to show off your bikini bod on the beach. Have you ever found yourself in the situation of trying on a million swimsuits at a store and just not finding the right one to make you feel sexy and confident? Well, that's about to change!

Before last year, I tended to settle for lower quality swimsuits that looked cute because of the color and style, but they didn't exactly flatter me in the perfect way. Last year I went on the hunt for a swimsuit that I would feel amazing in because I had a month full of Spanish beach excursions ahead of me. Although the women in Spain really don't care about their swimsuit (most go topless), I wasn't quite that daring and wanted a truly great swimsuit that would last for years to come. I ended up finding my perfect fit at European lingerie retail chain, Etam, in a small shop at the heart of Marseille, France. Etam has very high quality, chic swimwear for a decent price. See for yourself - http://en.etam.com/maillots-de-bain/the-collection/all-swimwear.html

Monokini from
Everything But Water
Petite - If you have a small frame, you'll most likely want to choose a swimsuit to enhance your curves. If you're small on top, choose a top with padding. Most bikini tops have at least some padding but if you're looking for more, Victoria's Secret has some great push up styles. Twist bandeau tops, triangle tops with ruffles or eye catching prints will give the appearance of a fuller chest. Marie Claire states, "Hothouse pinks and tiny prints make a big style statement," and they feature swimwear with paisley prints, polka dots, floral and geometric shapes as options for a petite figure. If you don't want to go with a two piece, try a plunge halter or a monokini, which  has side cut outs so it looks like a two piece in the back. Everything But Water has a stylish, unique selection of monokini's. I'm so in love with the one to the right.

model wearing Miraclesuit swimsuit
Suit from miraclesuit.com
Curvy - "Flaunt a full figure with retro prints and screen-queen silhouettes," says Marie Claire. High-waisted 50's inspired bikini's are oh so cute and trendy right now. Asos has a broad selection of adorable options in floral, vintage, polka dot and animal print designs. Check them out at http://www.asos.com/Women/Swimwear-Beachwear/High-Waisted-Bikini/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=17551&r=2. Rouching is your best friend if you want to conceal your tummy and there are many one and two piece styles out there with miracle fabrics and rouching in just the right areas. If you want to conceal your hips and thighs, Fitness suggests skirtini's and boy-cut shorts. To control cleavage, choose a trustworthy top with underwires, well-constructed halters, and wide bands.
Suit from Lululemon

Athletic - For a toned figure, you'll want a sporty cut and secure style if you're planning on playing beach volleyball or any other beach sport. Marie Claire suggests attention grabbing graphics, such as colorful stripes and polka dot patterns. Halter tops would be best for support but a triangle top would also be fine if you're not planning on doing activities. Show off your toned legs in a bottom with side ties. Lululemon has some options for swimwear for the athletic, moving body.

This year, I bought a cheaper suit at Target back in February. Part of the purchase was simply to escape winter and just dream about the days until I could sunbathe on my deck. I chose an edgy black two piece, mixing and matching the top and bottom so the top has bronze studs against the sweatheart neckline and the bottoms has frills on the side ties. The suit doesn't flatter me quite as well as my Etam one but a girl can always use a chic black suit, since black is a flattering color. Plus, you can never have too many swimsuits, especially if you're moving to or living in a warm climate like I will be soon in Texas :)

Loving this swimsuit from Etam with a
twist bandeau top and aztec inspired print.

Good luck finding your perfect swimsuit. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident -- that is the most important thing!

Fashions From Abroad: Sweden, Bulgaria & Malaysia

Interested in knowing more about the dress practices in other countries and cultures? So was I! I interviewed three friends from different parts of the world whom I met through fashion classes at Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy. All three girls are very interested in fashion and are continuing their fashion design studies in Florence. These girls represent the countries of Sweden, Bulgaria and Malaysia. They provided me with information on common attire worn in their country and how it differs from Italy and other parts of the world. Read on to become a little more cultured in the world of fashion!

Marielle is from Skövde, Sweden, and describes her personal style as a mix between bohemian, rock ‘n’ roll and minimalist.

Radoslava is from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and says her personal style is ever-changing, “some days I will dress casual, with jeans and a t-shirt, and then I pull out the girly attire and wear a dress and heels."

Klobo is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and describes herself as a “color freak,” with a love for blue and purple, hand-dyed colorful items, gradient prints and denim in purple, pink turquoise and yellow.

I asked the girls the same 5 questions and here are their responses:

What are some common fashions/styles you would see on the street in your hometown?
M: Minimalist, or very commercial/highstreet.
R: Mostly casual style, besides that some women love wearing more feminine clothes.
K: People mostly wear casual outfits. Blue denim and loose crop tops or blouses, along with short skirts and dresses in thin breathable, colorful fabrics.

Marielle describes her style as "bohemian,
rock 'n' roll & minimalist"

Describe typical outfits people wear (students, professionals, etc.)
M: It’s all quite stereotypical in Sweden, quite casual but smart. Clean would be one way of describing it. Black jeans, black leather shoes and plain t-shirts.
R: Jeans and t-shirts, loose shirts with leggings, dresses and heels, or an a-line skirt and blouse.
K: The typical government workers are usually wearing shirts and slacks (men) while women wear traditional ‘baju kurung.’ Sometimes on Friday, depending on the company, they will wear ‘batik baju kurung’ or ‘batik shirt.’ The private sector workers wear a shirt, slacks and a blazer, while women wear work dresses or a power suit. Students at private schools usually dress more stylish because they are free to wear almost anything compared to public universities.

Radoslava enjoys dressing casual & girly

How do the men dress?
M: It’s quite androgynous. Female and male trends are similar and this equalness is trendy in Sweden.
R: The majority of men wear jeans and t-shirts or jeans and shirts.
K: Men dress casual too. Denim and tees, sometimes t-shirts, but on special occasions, such as weddings, they will wear traditional clothing called ‘baju melayu.’

How much of an influence does the weather have on what people wear?
M: Weather is ace, as soon as the sun is out people drop their layers and show skin even if it’s way too early in the season.
R: We enjoy four seasons of weather in Bulgaria – beautiful spring, dry and hot summer, long and pleasant autumn and cold and snowy winter. Lightweights are worn in summer. Warmer clothes are needed in winter and rainwear is recommended in autumn.
K: Malaysia has 365 days of summer and seasonal monsoon rain so weather very much affects what we wear because it is hot and humid. Depending on the situation, it’s very rare to see people wearing coats and jackets, unless you go to the capital where many people work in air-conditioned offices.

Klobo expresses her style
through color
How would you compare the fashions of your country to Italy, other European countries or anywhere else you have been?
M: I’d say Scandinavia is more androgynous compared to the southern parts of Europe. In Italy it’s divided into masculinity and femininity. It’s two different fashions, whereas in Sweden everyone will wear baggy black t-shirts if it’s trendy at the time.
R: Compared to women in Italy, we love more feminine and elegant style.
K: Basically, what differentiates us from other countries, such as Europe or the West, is that people wear more colorful things because that is how we can spice up our fashion wardrobe. I noticed how people wear lots of black and neutral color here in winter and I will feel out of place because I will usually wear a red coat or yellow fur coat.

Spotlight on Audrey Hepburn: A Fashion Icon with Beautiful Words

Fashion isn’t only about great clothes. For some, fashion is a way of life. There is a woman in particular who changed the world of women’s fashion and also left behind great messages. Audrey Hepburn came from poverty but left a significant impact on the fashion industry as well as the people she influenced. Here is an introduction on her back-story, rise to stardom and most importantly, her inspiring words.

Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993): Audrey was an iconic Academy Award-winning actress, fashion model and humanitarian. She was born in Brussels, Belgium, and attended private schools in England and the Netherlands. Her father left her family when she was young, which she recalled as very traumatic. During World War II, Audrey and her mother went into hiding and endured the Dutch famine. Audrey suffered from malnutrition and developed many health problems, but she danced ballet to collect money and take her mind off the hunger. “The impact of these times would shape her life and values,” notes an Audrey fan site.  After the war, Audrey and her mother moved to London where she began studying ballet, modeling and acting. Her acting career really took off when she starred in Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck. After this defining role, she went on to star in several big films of the time and became a fashion icon with her style still being emulated today. Audrey made the boyish, tailored look very popular for her time. She introduced ballet flats and added elegant hats, scarves and sunglasses to accessorize outfits. However, she emphasized that beauty comes from within, which is seen in this famous quote:

Audrey is defined as a woman who changed the world by biographyonline.net. They state, "Audrey Hepburn defined feminine glamour and dignity, and was later voted as most beautiful women of the twentieth century. After her acting career ended in the mid 1960s, she devoted the remaining period of her life to humanitarian work with UNICEF."

"Audrey had the reputation of being a humble, kind and charming person, who lived the philosophy of putting others before herself," said audrey1.org.

Emerging Men's Trend: Outdoorsman

Mood board I created for Collection Theory class of
inspiration behind Men's Autumn/Winter '14 Collection
Last year at this time, I was hard at work in Italy with a final project for my Collection Theory class, which entailed creating mood boards and illustrations from the design concept, “American Dream.” My professor was a known fashion designer in the Florence area and had worked at major Italian fashion houses. Needless to say, he was very particular about our work, especially when it came to the illustrations. Since I had limited drawing skills my only advantage for the project was that I was likely the most familiar with the theme "American Dream." Actually, I am sure I was, because I was the only American in the class. I could go on about this cultural experience, but to focus on the topic at hand– the project was very challenging. Although the frustration during the drawing part almost killed me, creating the mood boards was one of the most enjoyable class work experiences I have ever had.  I have always loved creating mood boards, and since I was 14, I have turned the walls of every room I’ve lived in into an assemblage of themed fashion collages.

Editorial featuring Steffen Norgaard

For the men’s collection, I gravitated towards an “outdoorsman” theme. I’ve always thought the outdoors was inspiring and I am most familiar with this concept from living in Montana and Minnesota. I was channeling my dad and my Uncle Joel (who lives in the Northern MN woods) as inspirations behind the collection. Both men are into hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. I bought a huge men’s fashion magazine from a nearby negozio and began clipping runway pictures from fall and winter fashion lines. There were several design concepts, but I gravitated towards leather, fur and wool fabrics in earth tones of brown, burgundy, tan and forest green with woodsy, outdoor backgrounds. After styling the board, my “outdoors” theme had come to life.

Atelier de L'Armee autumn/winter
 2013/14

Now, a year later, this theme is literally coming to life. Fashion trend forecasting and analysis website, WGSN, describes the theme as “nomadic mountain man. Wild and rustic, rugged and hardwearing.” They say it's inspired by the wild and nomadic spirit of mountain men, fusing outdoors styling and workwear functionality with folk and Navajo-inspired prints and pattern. So men, if you are interested in trying this trend here is what you need to know:
  • Key Items: leather jacket, quilted vest, paraffin-waxed jacket, flannel button-downs, corduroy pants, fur hat and knit beanie
  • Colors: Earthy palette of olive greens, soft browns, and rustic reds accentuated by ochre (subdued mustard) and leafy green details
  • Fabrics: Paraffin-waxed cottons, soft waterproof moleskins, cotton twills, corduroy, leather, fur, and canvas with beads, feathers and rope serving as embellishments
  • Print & Pattern: Navajo-inspired patterns and folk prints along with traditional lumberjack plaids

Atelier de L'Armee autumn/winter 2013/14

This trend is a 2014 Autumn/Winter trend and although we are only approaching spring, you can still find ways to incorporate the look and be ahead of it when it gets big across mass retailers. My styling suggestion is to get a leather jacket in brown or black, because it’s versatile for both spring and fall weather.  Leather jackets are wonderful to have and they work well for casual attire or a night downtown. Throw it on and you'll instantly look a little more badass. If leather isn't your style, quilted or padded vests and jackets are also very popular among this trend. They're a little more casual and look great layered with a long sleeve fitted tee underneath. Another idea is to get something with a Navajo print, either a button-down flannel shirt or scarf would be trendy and unique. Otherwise, traditional lumberjack plaid flannel also showcases the trend.

If you want to be a fashion innovator, meaning you’re the first to try new trends before they hit the mainstream, then go out and showcase your mountain man side!
